VEDANTA AND MODERN LIFE

IS VEDANTA A CURE FOR CIVILIZATION?

Does the Vedanta administer medicine for this disease? Does this administering of medicine cure completely? We should have definite answers. For, medical science doesn’t give certainty for the cure of any disease; a few diseases relapse even after administering the medicine. Similarly, one can have doubt that by the practice of certain exercises mentioned in the Vedanta the disease may not be cured certainly ! But, there is a lot of difference between the two methods of curing; seeing the constitution of the body of the patient proper medicine is administered; whereas, the Vedantic treatment is based on the universal experience. Therefore, it is enough to show that the principle which is preached by the Vedantins is supported by the universal experience and those who faithfully follow the Reality are certainly benefitted.

SYMPTOMS OF THE DISEASE.

Let it be so. Let us deliberate, a little more, the symptoms of the disease-civilization. Its first symptom is competition. One thinks that he, pushing others backwards, should go forwards; this is the main mark of this civilization. Now-a-days, we see- people, families, villages, provinces and nations- are rushing; the one wants to defeat the other. Day-by-day, commodities and things are increasingly available; when many want to have a certain thing there will be naturally a competition to have it amongst themselves. Therefore, people want to work faster due to this competition. We have a fear that before we go others may obtain our desired object; therefore, as soon as possible, we want to have the knowledge of that object and enjoy it. For this purpose, for our speed movements, we have fast moving vehicles like trains, busses, etc; telephones and mobiles to talk; TV sets to watch; and we desire to purchase these things one by one. News bulletins, weeklies, dailies, etc. do not suffice for our individual speeds. Morning dailies become old by evening; and we need evening news-papers ! If it is continued, we may need bulletins published for every two hours!

We may call it as desirous amusement ( Kaama-vilaasa ). This amusement is seen in nations as well as in individuals. If the French defeated the English in this speedily hunting desires; the Germans defeated the English and the Americans defeated the Germans. And, among these nations, we don’t know who will succeed in this competition.

Desire is changed as anger if the former is not fulfilled or it is obstructed. This is the second mark of our civilization. There is a difference between desire and anger. At first, the mind starts to think about an object and takes the form of desire; then, the one competes to have the object as the desire gets the momentum; and after much effort fruit of it may appear. But, without our knowledge, when the desire is obstructed it changes as anger. When we have the anger, we don’t understand that it is the one; and it finishes its work. When that anger is subsided, it makes the one to regret that why he has done so. Fruit of anger sustains for a long period and it may afflict us. Evil deeds conducted by the one when he was in fit of anger cannot be adjusted not only by himself but by the nations also. Result of world-wars still laments us. Those who had participated in the wars, those who hadn’t, those who were victorious, those who weren’t and those who were helplessly victims of the havoc- all have to suffer still the evil result of the wars. Evils were not imagined by the Americans when they dropped atom-bombs on Japan. But, evils still show their effect in that region.

Fear is another symptom of the civilization-disease. This symptom is seen in excess everywhere “ I am afraid of him or vice-versa; the fear of the one who deceives me, that of the one who troubles me, that of the one who becomes a hindrance to my welfare, that of the one by whom I may have danger”- such fears have captured us all. One amongst us may boast himself that he is not afraid of anyone. This is similar to a terribly frightened clown, in a drama, tells that he doesn’t have a wee bit fear. Thus, we live in fear ! Fear has captured us; still, we strive to show that we don’t have it.

Due to this fear, the one doubting some trouble deceives the other one. There is an old story: There were two deceivers. Each one was carrying a bundle. One bundle contained cow-dung and the other one with sand. Both of them met in an inn. The one told the other one: “ I have food in this bundle and whoever gives me rice will receive this”. The other one replied: “ I have rice in this bundle and whoever gives me food will receive this rice”. Both of them exchanged their bundles. Both of them were surprised to know that they were mutually deceived. Similarly, we want to obtain good things from others by exchanging our useless things to them. But they also strive to deceive us. Thus both of us feel ashamed for our stupidity. In this manner, as a result of the fear of our respective welfares, one deceives the other and we suffer due to that deception; these are the main symptoms of this civilization-disease.
This mutual fear and deception don’t belong only to a few people. It is fit to tell that this is contagious-side effect disease that contaminates everyone. People used to talk about another global war. Every nation has this fear; the leaders apparently tell that there is no fear of war and they accumulate weapons as a plan of their protection. All nations strengthen their military cops; they recruit volunteers and these nations have mutual treaties. They arrange for encampments of weapons and soldiers. It is certain that everyone, in this entire world, has the fear of death !
